Within the large group of mutants of the "second generation", introduced by Marvel in the mid-70s, the Russian Peter Rasputin Nikolaievitch, aka Colossus, is (with Wolverine) the substantial diamond tip. The hero is equipped with the capacity to significantly increase his body mass and strength, covering it with an invulnerable organic steel, and can boast a really excellent aesthetic impact, thanks to the fascinating contrast between the metallic hue of his natural armor and a costume equipped with a brilliant, red and yellow polychromy. So far, Bowen Design has devoted to this amazing superhero only one 1:6 scale statue, sculpted by Randy Bowen, proposed in a classic version (the Colossus Statue) and a chrome variant (called Super Chrome Statue) and which, in my humble opinion, simply represents one of the most beautiful pieces ever produced by the American company! The chrome version was released in 2005 with an edition size of 1000 pieces, while the Colossus Statue (2004) is officially registered in the Bowen catalogue with the number 34 and has been produced in 2500 pieces worldwide. The hero is depicted in a sort of static, bodybuilder pose, which highlights in the best possible way the considerable bulk and the power of the sculptural physique: the bust is slightly inclined on the stretched and very muscular legs, the fists clenched and the arms folded in the act of inflating the powerful quadriceps. The sculpt is really made in a workmanlike manner: the large pectoral and hyper-defined abdominals shine through the bright costume to perfection, while the bare parts of the body show extremely well defined muscles on legs and arms and at sides of the enormous chest. In the classic version the perfect gray color accentuates further the contours with slightly dark shades, while the chrome variant, of course, relies entirely on the sculpt and the brilliance of the reflective surfaces. In both cases, the many horizontal striations of the metal armor overlap the curved shapes of the muscles, thus creating a play of geometric contrasts of a great visual impact and amplifying the metallic appearance of the figure. The costume's colors (faithful to the tables of Comics) are very bright and the curvilinear shapes of the hard-set lapels on shoulders accentuate the three-dimensionality of the whole. Very beautiful, high red boots cover the legs almost to the quadriceps and end with a sort of yellow kneepads, with one black pattern of great scenic effect, centered on the kneecaps. Also the wide red bracelets on wrists and the waist belt, with a circular and golden buckle, are well finished and outlined by a very thick and rounded border. The threatening face is wonderful and characterized by the typical squared hair, two magnetic white eyes and teeth clenched in evidence. The base is very simple, circular in shape, decorated with various carvings and with a big black X centered on a red background. The Super Chrome is a particularly delicate statue: presumably, the whole figure has been subjected to a pseudo-chrome plating (actually a coloring with a painting chrome effect) and subsequently treated again on yellow and red patches, which in this way, however, can more easily be flaking and show, over time, unsightly cracks. Fortunately, on my super chrome statue the coloring on the costume is uniform and almost perfect. The only defects are noticed in some slight scratching on the left boot and above the rounded edge at the bottom of the waist belt (on the right), where the yellow came off, just leaving the chrome color below slightly exposed. It is interesting to note that, in spite of the rather wide run, the quotations of the Colossus Statues on the market have always been high. Even better: for the sought-after and rare chrome version they can easily reach true record levels! And it could not be otherwise, because of the magnetic charm and charisma of the character, his spectacular and aesthetic polychromy, the excellent sculptural quality of the piece and a visual impact undoubtedly above the average. In other words, a unique and unmissable classic piece and a must-have for all Marvel collectors and fans.
